Bill Could Ban Native American Names on Mascots

Illinois state lawmakers are considering a bill that could ban Native American names, mascots, and logos in all public schools. The bill is currently in a subcommittee.

Reports say if the bill passes it could take effect in the year 2027. Schools that have a Native American-themed mascot are grandfathered into the bill, however schools after the year 2027 that decide to change their name to a Native American theme would not be allowed to do so.
