Bill Would Give K-12 Students Free Meals at School

A bill under consideration in the Illinois Senate would provide breakfast and lunch to all K-through-12 students across the state. The proposal would require the state Board of Education to reimburse schools for the cost of the free meals. It’s estimated to cost 209-million dollars a year. A related bill would create a grant program to give schools 75-hundred dollars each for free meal programs in case the first bill fails to pass.
