79 year old Fairfield resident, Shular Ray Smothers passed away at his home on Friday May 24, 2024.
Ray was born February 1, 1945, at home near Burnt Prairie, Illinois to Charles Owen and Freda (Laws) Smothers.
Ray married Linda McWilliams on May 2, 1964. He had many accomplishments in his life, including but not limited to Vietnam War Service, participating as a jockey and owner of harness racing horses. He retired as the Superintendent of the Electric Department for the City of Fairfield. He was a family man, a friend to many, having never met a stranger in his lifetime.
Ray is survived by his daughter; Niki (Jason) Melton, a son; Donnie (Kim) Smothers, and granddaughter, Kensey (Nathan) Musgrave, a great-grandson and namesake Westin Ray Musgrave, all of Fairfield.
He leaves behind two Brothers; Roche (Linda) Smothers, and Benny Smothers of Burnt Prairie, IL. Sister-in-Law Genie Smothers of Mill Shoals and a niece and several nephews, as well as special friends, Mary Lousignont and Brenda Rister of Fairfield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda and his parents.
A visitation will be held 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 30, 2024 at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield, IL. Inurnment to follow at Maple Hill Cemetery with full Military Rites provided by Anthony Wayne Post 176, American Legion and Wayne Memorial Post 4535, VFW.
