The Southern Illinois Baseball Coaches Association is gearing up for their annual all-star games this Sunday, featuring talented players from the region. The senior game is scheduled to kick off at 1 PM, followed by the underclassman game at 4 PM, both taking place at Itchy Jones Stadium on the Southern Illinois University campus. Representing Fairfield High School in the senior game will be Dylan Fleener, Landon Harrelson, and Creson White, while Talen Hixenbaugh and Ian Puckett will be showcasing their skills in the underclassman game.
The Southern Illinois Coaches Association for Girls Basketball has revealed the All-South team, recognizing standout players from the region. In Class 2A , Fairfield’s Rylee Edwards and Carmi-White County’s Mara Serafini and Caroline Simmons have secured spots on the team. Meanwhile, in Class 1A, Grace Bishop and Lola Nussmeyer from Edwards County have been selected to All South Team.
Several Fairfield Mules football players will be suiting up again for the BLUE team, this time for the 2024 Southern Illinois Coaches Association All-Star Football Game Friday night at 7pm at Murphysboro High School. Players in the game representing Fairfield include; Trey Mason, Latrael Snyder, Jay Snyder, Vega Stanley and Bronson Rilea. Coach Justin Townsend of the Mules and Coach Joe Clark of the Eldorado Eagles are Co-Chairs of the All-Star Game which represent 30 schools across Southern Illinois all the way over to the Metro East. Gates will open at 5pm with food trucks available and the concession stand will also be open. Admission to the game is $7
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The Cardinals salvaged their series finale after topping the Houston Astros 4-2 at Minute Maid Park. Miles Mikolas earned his fourth win of the year after striking out three and allowing two runs over six innings. Ryan Helsley secured his 20th save of the season after striking out two in the bottom of the ninth. Nolan Arenado went one for three with a solo homer to bring his season total to six. St. Louis is now third in the NL Central at 29-and-31 and will host the Colorado Rockies for a four-game series that begins tonight at Busch Stadium.
The Cubs swept the Crosstown Classic after staging a 7-6, walk off victory over the White Sox from Wrigley. The game was tied in the bottom of the ninth until Mike Tauchman stepped up and smashed a solo homer to end the game. Cody Bellinger recorded two RBI, while Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner drove in runs. Hector Neris got the win in relief as Chicago won the two-game set. The Cubbies are still second in the NL Central at 31-and-31. Paul DeJong and Corey Julks slugged solo homers for the White Sox. Michael Kopech got the loss in relief as the Sox have lost 13 straight games. Chicago remains last in the AL Central at 15-and-47. The White Sox host the Red Sox tonight while the Cubs visit the Reds.
