FAIRFIELD MULES FOOTBALL PARTICIPATE AT 7-ON- 7 CAMP AT UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS
The Fairfield Mules Football team participated recently at the University of Illinois 7-on-7 camp on the campus of the University of Illinois. A Fighting Illini Varsity Head Coach directs each session where participants get to experience football at the college level and at the University of Illinois facilities. The Mules are coached by Justin Townsend, who will be entering his 24th season this fall.
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The Cardinals earned a series win over the Pirates following a 4-3 victory in the finale from St. Louis. Paul Goldschmidt crushed a two-run homer in the third inning, while Pedro Pages (paw-hezz ) singled-home another run. Brendan Donovan broke a 3-3 deadlock with a solo homer in the sixth, which proved to be the game-winning run. Chris Roycroft got the win in relief as St. Louis has won three of its last four games and improved to 33-and-34. The Cardinals are in second place in the NL Central, and they send Kyle Gibson to the mound against the Cubs this afternoon in Chicago.
The Chicago Cubs allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh during a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field. The Cubs led by two entering the inning before Mark Leiter Jr. gave up back-to-back-to-back RBI to Jose Lowe, Ben Rortvedt, and Yandy Diaz. Leiter was charged with his fourth loss in relief after Justin Steele tossed six scoreless innings. The Cubs are in fourth place in the NL Central at 33-and-36. Chicago sends Jordan Wicks to the mound against the Cardinals this afternoon.
The Chicago White Sox snapped a four-game losing streak with a 3-2, ten-inning win over the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park. Andrew Vaughn and Luis Robert Jr. hit back-to-back homers in the third inning to give the Sox an early 2-0 lead, but the M’s tied the game with a one-out solo home run from Julio Rodriguez in the bottom of the ninth. However, Andrew Vaughn drove in Korey Lee with the game-winning run in the tenth. Michael Kopech earned his second win in relief, while Tanner Banks picked up his second save.

NHL HOCKEY NEWS:
The St. Louis Blues are keeping their roster builder around. The team signed general manager and president of hockey operations Doug Armstrong to a contract extension yesterday. The deal runs through the end of the 2028-29 season. Armstrong has been with the team since May of 2008. Additionally, St. Louis promoted Alex Steen to the role of special assistant to the general manager. He will remain in that role until 2025-26, and then he will become the team’s general manager.
