Franklin “Frank” Lee Hargis, age 87, of Flora, Illinois, peacefully passed away on Saturday evening, June 22, 2024, at his home. Born on April 29, 1937, in Flora, he was the beloved son of Rodell Theodore and Gladys F. (Bowen) Hargis. On August 17, 1955, Frank married Norma J. Stanford at Bethlehem Christian Church. Their 68 years of marriage were a testament to their enduring love and commitment.

Throughout his life, Frank was known for his hard work and diverse talents. He worked in the oil fields, at the shoe factory, and eventually began using his artistic creativity as a sign painter. Frank also ventured into the van customization business, worked at the lumber yard, drove a school bus, and retired as a machinist at Hella. A true artist and craftsman, he was a proud member of the Knifemaker’s Guild, creating custom knives that became prized collector’s items.

Frank was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. In recent years he cherished the visits from the wildlife right outside of his home, and kept snacks ready for all of his friends—including the birds, squirrels, and rabbits.

His interest in history led him to buckskinner reenactment events, where he enjoyed using black powder guns and authentically recreating period-accurate clothing and tools. With his extensive knowledge of Flora and Clay County history, Frank’s memories and appreciation of the past made him a valuable resource, and he enjoyed sharing old photos and recollections online.

Frank is survived by his wife, Norma Hargis of Flora; his children, Rebecca (Keith) Belcher of McLeansboro, Randy (Lisa) Hargis of Flora, and Scott (Donna) Hargis of Flora; his grandchildren, Misty (Jeremy) Dozier, Jenny (Tim) Connaway, Shaun (Lindsay) Belcher, Matthew (Mandy) Hargis, Nathan (Jenna) Hargis, Topper Eastin, Logan (Deonna) Hargis, Travis (Kristina) Hargis, Misty (Mitch) Gill, Chris Smith, and Kim (C.J.) Smerdel; along with 28 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in passing by his father, Rodell Hargis; mother, Gladys Hargis Hamilton; father-in-law, Wilson Stanford; and mother-in-law, Dorothy Stanford VanDyke.

In honoring Frank’s wishes, no services will be held. Arrangements are by Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Memorial donations are suggested to the Oil Belt Christian Service Camp or the Oblong Children’s Christian Home, and these can be made through the funeral home.
