After completing high school, Harry joined the United States Navy on Jan 16, 1945, and served until July 1946. He then re-enlisted in August of 1947 until he was discharged in April of 1950. After his military service, he married Mary Lou McVaigh on May 5, 1950. They purchased land in White County and started farming.
Harry was a self-made man. He had learned the trades such as electrical, plumbing, welding, carpentry, mechanics, woodworking as a young man. As a result, one carpenter, Mary Lou, and Harry built their first Bedford stone home. What Harry couldn’t do, Mary Lou could, so they made a great team. In 1970, he decided to make a career change and went to work as an insurance agent for Country Companies. He excelled in that profession because he genuinely liked to help provide his clients with a product he believed would help them.
Harry and Mary Lou were members of the First Christian Church of Carmi, IL. They led lives that reflected their faith in Jesus Christ for many years. The majority of their free time was spent in church service, church activities, and with church friends.
