As the fourth of July approaches, Illinois residents are reminded to prioritize regulations and safety when it comes to fireworks. In the state of Illinois, the majority of consumer fireworks are prohibited. However, novelty fireworks like smoke bombs and sparklers are permitted for use during the holiday. Larger fireworks such as mortars are illegal within city limits. Violating these regulations constitutes a class A misdemeanor, which can result in fines ranging from $75 to $2,500.
In July 2023, hospitals throughout Illinois recorded a total of 108 firework-related injuries, with fortunately no reported fatalities. The majority of these injuries were caused by mortar fireworks, roman candles, firecrackers, and bottle rockets, often affecting victims’ hands, face, and torso.
Fireworks have been banned in Illinois since 1942 following the enactment of the Pyrotechnic Use Act.
