In Wayne County Circuit Court Tuesday afternoon presided over by Judge Denton Aud, Fairfield resident Eric Vaughan made an appearance. Vaughan is currently facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and domestic battery in Wayne County.
During the court hearing, Vaughan expressed concerns about his ability to communicate with the outside world, including his legal counsel. Responding to Vaughan’s concerns, Judge Aud informed Vaughan’s attorney, the bailiff, and Assistant State’s Attorney Ellis about the situation.
Vaughan, in his court appearance, entered a plea of Not Guilty to the charges against him. A jury trial has been scheduled for September 3rd at Wayne County Circuit Court. Vaughan’s attorney, Heidi Hoffee, filed a motion for discovery, requesting the prosecution to provide discovery materials by July 30th, which was granted by the court.
In discussions related to pretrial release, Attorney Hoffee argued that Vaughan was being denied certain privileges at the jail, such as access to medical care, communication with his legal counsel and others outside the jail, and the ability to write and mail letters. The prosecution countered with alleged threats made by Vaughan towards jail staff. Taking these factors into consideration, Judge Denton Aud decided to keep Vaughan detained at Wayne County Jail. A request for a mental health evaluation was made by the defense and approved by Judge Aud.
Vaughan is expected to appear in court again on July 30th for further proceedings in the case.
