As Illinoisans gear up for the holiday weekend and the summer season, the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) is emphasizing the importance of adhering to proper safety measures when using grills. July emerges as the peak month for grill-related fires, closely followed by June, May, and August.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), approximately 64% of households in the US own an outdoor BBQ, grill, or smoker. Gas grills are identified as contributors to a higher number of fires compared to charcoal grills. On average, an alarming 10,200 home fires are ignited by grills annually. Shockingly, about 20% of these reported grill fires are attributed to unclean grills. Furthermore, over a quarter of grill-related structure fires initiate on exterior balconies or open porches, with 8% commencing from an outside wall catching fire, and 4% originating from structural elements or framing. Each year, an average of 22,155 individuals visit emergency rooms due to grill-related injuries, with nearly half of these injuries stemming from thermal burns caused by fire or contact with hot objects.

In addition to grills, bonfires, pit fires, and campfires also pose fire safety hazards during the summer months. Campfires should be constructed at least 25 feet away from tents, shrubs, and any flammable materials. Prior to setting up a campfire, ensure that fires are permitted in your camping area. For safety when using chimineas, outdoor fireplaces, and fire pits, maintain a minimum distance of 10 feet between these heating sources and your home or any combustible materials.
