MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

The St. Louis Cardinals came up empty in both games of their doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals from Busch Stadium. St. Louis blew an early 3-0 lead during a 6-4 loss in game one. The Cards gave up three runs in the fifth before allowing the go-ahead run to come across in the sixth. Nolan Arenado, Alec Burleson, and Paul Goldschmidt all homered in the losing effort, and Andre Pallante was charged with his fourth loss after surrendering four runs on six hits in six-and-a-third innings. St. Louis allowed three home runs in a 8-5 game two loss. Lars Nootbaar homered for St. Louis, and Gordon Graceffo was charged with his first loss after allowing three runs on four hits in three-and-a-third innings. The Cards have dropped three of five and are in second place in the NL Central at 48-and-44. St. Louis hosts the Cubs tomorrow night. First pitch is at 7:15.

The Chicago Cubs stranded ten base runners during a 4-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. The Cubs scored a pair of runs in the top of the second and never looked back. Christopher Morel homered in the victory, while Shota Imanaga earned his eighth win after holding Baltimore to just six hits over six scoreless innings. The Northsiders are now in fourth place in the NL Central at 44-and-49. Justin Steele starts for the Cubs against Baltimore this evening at 5:35.

The Chicago White Sox went one-and-one during their doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins .. Luis Robert Jr. hit a two-run home run that ended up being the difference in a 3-1 win in game one. Erick Fedde tossed five shutout innings to earn his seventh win. In game two, the Southsiders surrendered a two-run lead and lost 3-2. The Sox gave up back-to-back home runs in the top of the sixth before allowing the winning run to come in during the seventh. Martin Maldonado homered for Chicago, and Mike Soroka was charged with his tenth loss out of the pen. The Southsiders have dropped nine of ten against Minnesota this season, and they’re in last place in the NL Central at 27-and-68. Chicago hosts Pittsburgh tomorrow night at 7:10.

The field for the Home Run Derby is set. Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers and Teoscar Hernandez of the Los Angeles Dodgers have been announced as the final two competitors in the eight-player field. Garcia was knocked out in the first round last year, while Hernandez is set to make his derby debut. Two-time champion Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, Philadelphia’s Alec Bohm, Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson, Atlanta’s Marcell Ozuna, Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez and Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. are the other players set to compete for the derby crown.

NHL NEWS:

The St. Louis Blues are adding an All-Star to their blue line. The team signed Ryan Suter to a one-year contract worth 775-thousand dollars yesterday. Suter spent the last three years with the Dallas Stars. The 39-year-old had two goals and 15 assists in 82 games with the Stars last season.

OLYMPIC BASKETBALL NEWS:

Team USA knocked off Canada 86-72 in exhibition play leading up to the Paris Olympics later this month. Anthony Edwards came off the bench to pace the team with 13 points while knocking down 60-percent of his shots from the field. Anthony Davis recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to go along with four blocks. LeBron James posted seven points, five boards and three steals. Team USA will now face Australia on Monday in Abu Dhabi. RJ Barrett led Canada with 12 points in the losing effort. Dillon Brooks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander chipped in 10 points apiece. Team USA is now 5-and-0 in exhibition games against the Canadians since 1999.
