The McLeansboro City Council convened for their regular meeting on a Tuesday night, with a session lasting about 45 minutes.
One of the key highlights of the meeting was a presentation by Chris Howten from the Hamilton County Economic Development Commission. Howten discussed ongoing efforts between the council, the city, and the county to attract retail businesses to the area. After several months of collaborative discussions, it was decided that a follow-up meeting would be held on August 6th to further progress on this initiative.
During the meeting, the council approved the Consent Agenda, which included various items such as a TIF reimbursement to Wuebbels Repair LLC, arrangements for temporary road closures related to the upcoming Kiwanis Fall Festival, and the scheduled closure of the City Pool on August 4th.
A significant decision made by the council was the hiring of Don Davis from Carmi as the city’s wastewater operator, with a monthly salary set at $600.
The council passed an ordinance to update the city’s utility rates for the upcoming Fiscal Year 2025, reflecting adjustments to meet the evolving needs of the community.
In addition, an ordinance was approved to bring the due dates and late fee assessments in line with state statutes and the ICC, ensuring compliance with regulations.
Another important development was the approval of an ordinance to establish a right-of-way licensing agreement with Frontier Communications. The agreement included specific provisions such as restricting work hours for Frontier to before 5 PM and holding them accountable for any damages requiring repairs.
Looking ahead, the council announced that the city audit would be presented at the next month’s meeting, providing insights into the financial health and management of the city.
The council confirmed the renewal of a $325,000 line of credit for the ongoing sewer project, demonstrating their commitment to critical infrastructure improvements in the community.
In the Police report shared during the meeting, plans were outlined for the recruitment of a K9 officer in the first week of August, the return of an officer on Monday, and the upcoming graduation of a police trainee from the academy on August 9th. The trainee is expected to make an appearance at the next council meeting.
