The Fairfield Mules Football season is fast approaching and the Mules are looking for an opponent to open up the season against. For the third time in the last four seasons, Vienna-Goreville will not play a varsity football schedule. The announcement came last week as Black Diamond Conference teams scramble to find another opponent to fill the empty week on their schedule. Fairfield Mules Head Football Coach, Justin Townsend who also serves as Athletic Director says he is actively trying to fill the date, but its not looking good at this time. The Mules were scheduled to open up the season Saturday, August 31st against Vienna/Goreville and if this open date does not get filled by an opponent, the Mules will get a forfeit win. Something new this year, the IHSA is giving schools the option to have a football preseason scrimmage and Townsend says with the uncertainty of not having a Week 1 game, the Mules will have a home scrimmage with Richland County (Olney Tigers) on Friday, August 23rd at 7pm at The Train Yard. That evening will also be Meet The Mules with events beginning at 5:45 with Cross Country, Tennis, Golf, and Volleyball team introductions followed by a Volleyball scrimmage in the newly remodeled Mule Barn. At 6:45, Football and Cheer introductions for Fairfield and Richland County will take place out at the Train Yard before the scrimmage game. Admission to the scrimmage will be free. August 12th is the first official day for IHSA fall practices.
