Officials from the Shawnee National Forest have announced the temporary closure of the Garden of the Gods area to facilitate essential pavement repairs. Contractors have been preparing for these repairs for several weeks, and now it is necessary to close the roads and parking lots for the work to be carried out effectively.
The repair work will involve obliterating, reshaping, and resurfacing Forest Service roads and parking lots within the Garden of the Gods area. All roads and parking lots will be closed during this period. The repair process is expected to take approximately two to four weeks, depending on weather conditions. If the contractors are able to complete the repairs ahead of schedule, the forest officials will provide updates on their social media platforms and website.
While the trails in the area will remain open for visitors, hikers and equestrians are advised to avoid road crossings and newly resurfaced road and parking lot areas. Access to the Garden of the Gods will only be possible by hiking trails from the Hitching Post and Golden Circle trailheads. Recreation staff have placed barricades at road crossings to guide visitors accordingly.
