CENTER STREET GRADE SCHOOL ANNOUNCES BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL TRYOUT DATE:
Center Street Grade School has announced the date for baseball and softball tryouts. The date is Thursday, August 1st.
Softball tryouts will be held at Southwest Park.
8th grade will meet from 9-10
6th and 7th grades will meet from 10:30 – 11:30.
Baseball tryouts will be held from 5-6:30 at Lakeside Park for grades 6-8.
You will need to be registered for school, have a physical on file, and complete your athletic registration before tryouts.
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
Paul Goldschmidt hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 4-3 at Busch Stadium. Willson Contreras added a solo home run while Pedro Pages [[ paw-hezz ]] and Michael Siani each plated runs. Ryan Helsley got the win in relief. St. Louis snapped a three-game losing streak with the win and is in second place in the NL Central at 54-and-51. Andre Pallante starts for the Cardinals against Texas tonight at 6:45.
The Chicago Cubs scored three runs in the top of the ninth during a 7-3 win over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Chicago led by just a run entering the inning before Patrick Wisdom ripped a solo home run. Michael Busch and Dansby Swanson also drove in runs during the frame, while Javier Assad earned his fifth win after allowing three runs on five hits in six innings. The Cubs have won their last two games but are still in fourth place in the NL Central at 51-and-56. The Northsiders send Jameson Taillon to the mound against the Reds tonight in Cincinnati at 6:10.
The Cubs and Rays have made a notable move ahead of the MLB trade deadline. Chicago acquired third baseman Isaac Paredes [[ e-sock puh-ray-dess ]] from Tampa Bay in exchange for third baseman Christopher Morel [[ MORE-el ]] and prospects Ty Johnson and Hunter Bigge. The 25-year-old Parades was the Rays’ only All-Star this season. He is batting .245 with 16 home runs and 55 RBI in 101 games. The 25-year-old Morel is hitting .199 with 18 homers and 51 RBI in 103 games. The Northsiders also traded for Blue Jays reliever Nate Pearson over the weekend.
The Chicago White Sox have their second 14-game losing streak of the season. The Southsiders fell to the Seattle Mariners 6-3 in Chicago on Sunday. Chicago surrendered five runs in the first three innings and couldn’t make enough noise to get back into the game. Paul DeJong homered in the losing effort, while Garrett Crochet was charged with his eighth loss after allowing three earned runs and two unearned runs on six hits in three innings. The Sox remain in last place in the AL Central at 27-and-81. Chris Flexen starts for Chicago against Kansas City tonight at 7:10.

OLYMPIC NEWS:
The U.S. men’s basketball team cruised to a 110-84 victory over Serbia in their first game of the 2024 Summer Games. Kevin Durant came off the bench and led all scorers with 23 points for the Americans. LeBron James came within one assist of recording a double-double after scoring 21 points. Nuggets star center Nikola Jokic led Serbia with 20 points. Up next for Team USA is a battle against South Sudan on Wednesday afternoon. The U.S. women play Japan today in their first game.
More medals are heading home for Team USA. Carson Foster finished third in the men’s 400 meter individual medley to capture the bronze medal. Foster finished 5.71 seconds behind France’s Leon Marchand, who set an Olympic record on his way to the gold. In the women’s 100 meter butterfly, Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh finished first and second to win the gold and silver. Nic Fink also took home a silver medal after tying for second in the men’s 100 meter breaststroke. Luke Hobson aims to add to the U.S. medal count when he competes in the men’s 200 meter freestyle final today.
Americans Lee Kiefer and Lauren Scruggs took home the gold and silver medals in women’s fencing at the Paris Olympics on Sunday. Kiefer beat Scruggs 15-6 in the women’s foil individual final to earn her second straight Olympic gold medal. Scruggs, who earned the silver, made history after becoming the first ever Black U.S. fencer to win an Olympic medal in an individual women’s event.
The U.S. women’s soccer team blew out Germany 4-1 to improve to 2-and-0 at the Paris Olympics. Sophia Smith netted a brace after scoring in the 11th and 44th-minutes. The ladies lead Group B with six points and will kick off against Australia in their next match on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the U.S. men’s soccer team will face Guinea in its next game on Tuesday.
