CISNE MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL:
Cisne Middle School baseball practice for today, (July 31st) has been cancelled.
The first practice will now be Thursday, Aug 1, from 10am -12 noon. Cisne/Geff Softball practice will start Monday, August 5th from 8:30am to 10:30am. Players must have current physicals on file in the school office in order to participate.
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
. The St. Louis Cardinals scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to beat the Texas Rangers 8-1 at Busch Stadium. Tommy Pham hit a pinch hit grand slam in his first game back with the Cardinals, while Masyn Winn also went deep. Lance Lynn earned his sixth win after holding Texas to a run on three hits in five innings. St. Louis has won two of three and remains in third place in the NL Central at 55-and-52. Michael McGreevy starts for the Cardinals against Texas this afternoon AT 1:15.
The St. Louis Cardinals are bolstering their bullpen. The team received reliever Shawn Armstrong in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays just before the trade deadline last night. The Cardinals sent outfielder Dylan Carlson to Tampa Bay to complete the deal. Armstrong is 2-and-2 with a 5.40 ERA in 46-and-two-thirds innings this season, but he put up a 1.38 ERA in 2023.
The Chicago Cubs got off to a slow start during their 6-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. The Cubs gave up five runs in the first two innings and trailed the rest of the way. Cody Bellinger homered in the losing effort, and Justin Steele was charged with his fifth loss after giving up five runs on six hits in five innings. The Northsiders have dropped five of their last seven and remain in last place in the NL Central at 51-and-58. Kyle Hendricks starts for Chicago against Cincinnati tonight AT 6:10.
The Chicago Cubs are selling off a bullpen piece. The team sent righty Mark Leiter Jr. to the New York Yankees ahead of last night’s trade deadline. The Cubs received pitching prospect Jack Neely and infield prospect Ben Cowles to complete the deal. Leiter was 2-and-4 with a 4.21 ERA in 39 appearances for the Cubs this season.
The Chicago White Sox are on a 16-game losing streak following a 4-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Sox are in last place in the AL Central at 27-and-83. Drew Thorpe starts for Chicago against Kansas City today at 1:10.
The Chicago White Sox wrapped up their fire sale by trading away three players before last night’s trade deadline. The team sent Eloy Jimenez to Baltimore, shipped Paul DeJong to Kansas City, and traded Tanner Banks to the Phillies. In return, the Southsiders acquired infielder William Bergola and pitching prospects Jarold Rosado and Trey McGough.

U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team Wins Gold:
The U.S. women’s gymnastics team is back on top of the world. They won the Olympics gold medal for the first time since 2016 Tuesday. Simone Biles sealed the win with her floor routine performance. This is the fourth gold medal for the U.S. women, with the other three coming in 1996, 2012 and 2016. For Biles, it’s her U.S.-record breaking eighth career medal overall including her fifth gold. Up next for the team are the individual event finals on Thursday. The men’s all-around final is set for Wednesday.
Team USA Men’s Hoops To Face South Sudan In Group Stage:
The United States’ men’s basketball team will be back on the hardwood for more Olympic action today. The Americans are set to face South Sudan for the top spot in Group C through two games. The two countries have never played each other in the Olympics. Team USA defeated South Sudan 101-100 in a thrilling pre-Olympic exhibition game in Abu Dhabi earlier this month.
