Thursday afternoon brought about an interesting weather event for our area. The National Weather Service issued multiple severe thunderstorm watches and warnings for a significant portion of Southern Illinois, including a tornado warning for Clay County shortly after noon. Wayne-White crews worked throughout the afternoon and evening to restore power to more than 700 residences and businesses as numerous power lines, poles, and trees were knocked down due to the fierce winds. The Clay County Sheriff’s Department reported that Rt. 45 South from Rt. 50 to the Wayne County Line had to be closed temporarily due to downed utility poles and electric lines.
Despite the intense weather, the day remained scorching hot, but relief was on the horizon. A cold front was poised to sweep through the region, promising a much-needed cooldown today.
Today, cooler and less humid air was set to work its way to the area, offering a welcome relief from the week’s oppressive heat. While temperatures were still expected to reach the mid to upper 80s, a refreshing northwest breeze would make conditions more bearable. Although a stray shower or storm could develop in the eastern counties, most areas were forecasted to stay dry.
The heat won’t be gone for long. Seasonably warm temperatures return through the weekend, with high temperatures climbing back up near 90 degrees. Mid 90s are set to return next week.
