Carroll Grimes, at 85 years of age, died peacefully at his residence in Mount Carmel, IL, August 4th, 2024, surrounded by family. Carroll was born in Fairfield, IL, on January 24th, 1939, to John and Mildred (Wood) Grimes. He is preceded in death by his 9 siblings: Gerry Cravens, Doris Minnick, Joe Grimes, Bill Grimes, Wanda Baker, Edwin Grimes, James Grimes, Blanche Grimes, and Walter Grimes.
Carroll is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty (Benton) Grimes. Carroll served in the US Army from 1956-1959, stationed in Germany. After his discharge he worked at Airtex for 33 years, during which time he fathered two children: Jim Grimes (wife Becky) and Kim Thomason (husband Marshall). Carroll was “Grandpa Carroll” to 5 grandchildren: Chandler Atkins, Tyson Wiggins, Becky Grimes/Allen, Elise (Thomason) Bramlet, and Hannah Grimes, and 9 great grandchildren. He loved spending time with his family, working on his farm, fishing with his grand/great grandchildren, and watching the Cardinals. Carroll was an avid country-western music fan, spending much of his life performing in various iterations of a sibling comprised band. He is loved and will be missed.
Funeral services for Carroll Grimes will be held at 1 PM, Friday, August 9th at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield, with visitation from 11 AM until the time of service at the funeral Home. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery with military rites provided by Anthony Wayne Post #176 American Legion and the Wayne County Post #4535 VFW. Memorials in his honor may be made New Heights Tutoring and Mentoring and will be accepted at the funeral home.
