Illinois State Police Troop 10 responded to a multi vehicle crash with injuries Sunday afternoon just shortly after 2 O’clock on I-57 northbound at milepost 104 near Dix in Jefferson County. State Police say a truck tractor semi-trailer was stopped in traffic with a pickup truck towing a boat trailer stopped behind it. Another truck tractor semi-trailer was unable to stop and struck the rear of the boat trailer pulled by the pickup truck which then struck the semi which was stopped in traffic. The pickup truck towing boat trailer and one of the semis became engulfed in flames. The Jefferson Fire Protection District says a total of six patients were transported to hospitals by three ambulance services and Air Evac flying one driver to an area hospital with serious injuries.
Northbound lanes were closed and traffic was diverted to Exit 103. Just after 4pm Sunday afternoon the left lane was re-opened to traffic. All lanes were reopened at approximately 11:40 Sunday night. Illinois State Police say the crash is still under investigation.
