Registration is open the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church Upward Soccer Season set to kick off September 7th. Open to ages pre-K 4th thru 8th grade. Practices will begin the week of August 26th and games will be played on Saturdays and weeknights. Cost is $50 for each player and can be paid online at the end of registration or at evaluations tonight or Wednesday.  Evaluations will be held from 5pm to 7pm. Check out the link below to register.

Cisne Middle School baseball practice will be today (Monday, August 5th)  from 10am -12 noon
Cisne/Geff softball practice begins today (Monday, August 5th) from 8:30am -10:30am.

 

Wayne City Jr High cross country practice will start on Monday, August 5 from 6:30pm-7:30pm. Athletes will meet in the grade school gym. This is for 5th-8th grade. You must have a physical on file.

 

 

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:

The St. Louis Cardinals dropped their four-game series with the Chicago Cubs following a 6-2 loss at Wrigley Field last night. Masyn Winn hit a two-run home run in the third inning to give St. Louis an early lead, but the CUBS scored two runs in each the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Miles Mikolas was charged with his ninth loss after surrendering four runs on eight hits in four innings. Mike Tauchman and Miguel Amaya both went deep in the victory, while Justin Steele earned his third win after striking out six and allowing two runs on three hits in six-and-two-thirds innings. The Cubs have won four of their last five, but they remain in fourth place in the NL Central at 55-and-59. MInnesota at Chicago tonight at 7:05. The Cards have dropped three of four. St. Louis is three games out of the final NL Wild Card spot and five-and-a-half back of Milwaukee for first place in the NL Central at 57-and-55. Andre Pallante starts for the Cardinals against the Mets today in St. Louis at 4:15 this afternoon as this is a make up game that wast postponed from May 8th.

The Chicago White Sox are making baseball history. The Sox became the first team since 1988 to lose 20 games in a row after falling to Minnesota 13-7 at Target Field. Chicago is in last place in the AL Central at 27-and-87. Jonathan Cannon starts for Chicago against Oakland tonight in oakland at 8:40.

OLYMPIC NEWS:

>>USA Women’s Basketball Win Final Group Play Game

The U.S. women’s basketball team extended its winning streak to 58 straight in Olympic competition on Sunday. Team USA defeated Germany 87-68 in their final group play game. Jackie Young led the charge with 19 points off the bench. The U.S. will meet Nigeria in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Meanwhile, LeBron James and the U.S. men’s basketball team will battle Brazil tomorrow in the quarterfinals.

>>American Noah Lyles Wins Gold In Men’s 100-Meter

Sprinter Noah Lyles broke a 20-year drought for the Americans. After a photo finish, and a difference of five-one-thousandths of a second, Lyles won the gold medal in the men’s 100 meter yesterday in Paris. Fellow American Fred Kerley took home bronze after finishing in third. Four more medal events are on tap today in athletics.

>>Scottie Scheffler Wins Gold For Team USA

Scottie Scheffler is an Olympic champion after winning gold at the Paris Games. Scheffler finished atop the leaderboard in the men’s individual golf tournament at 19 under par Sunday. The 28-year-old shot a 62 in the final round to take first place. Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood won silver at 18 under par. Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama won bronze. Fellow Americans Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark finished tied for ninth and 14th, while Collin Morikawa finished tied for 24th.

>>U.S. Adds Three More Swimming Medals

It was a big final day in swimming for Team USA at the Paris Olympics. Americans added three more medals including the women winning gold in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay. The men’s 4 x 100-meter medley relay team led by Caeleb Dressel earned silver. Meanwhile, American Bobby Finke won his second straight gold medal in the men’s 1500-meter freestyle while setting a new world record. Sunday marked the final day of swimming with Team USA winning 28 total medals in the pool in Paris, 10 more than the next country Australia.

>>U.S. Increases Medal Lead

The U.S. increased its medal lead at the Paris Olympics with 10 more medals on Sunday. Team USA has now won 71 total medals including 19 gold, which is tied with China for the most gold. The Chinese are now second in the overall standings with 45 medals followed by France with 44.
