Registration is open the Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church Upward Soccer Season set to kick off September 7th. Open to ages pre-K 4th thru 8th grade. Practices will begin the week of August 26th and games will be played on Saturdays and weeknights. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals had just six hits during a 6-0 loss to the New York Mets at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals surrendered four runs in the fifth inning of the losing effort. Andre Pallante was charged with his sixth loss after allowing five runs on five hits in four-and-two-thirds innings. The Cardinals dropped to 57-and-56and they look to shake off a rough stretch when they begin a series with the Tampa Bay Rays at Busch Stadium tonight. The Cardinals have dropped four of their last five games and are currently in third place in the NL Central. St. Louis is six games behind Milwaukee for first place in the division, and the Cards sit four games out of the final NL Wild Card spot. Sonny Gray starts for the Cardinals tonight. The Chicago Cubs managed just four hits during a 3-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins at Wrigley Field. The Cubs went 0-for-four with runners in scoring position and left six runners on base. Kyle Hendricks was charged with his tenth loss after allowing two runs on five hits in six innings. The Cubs remain in last place in the NL Central at 55-and-60. Shota Imanaga starts for the Northsiders against Minnesota tonight at 7:05.
The Chicago White Sox have the longest losing streak in the history of the Junior Circuit. The White Sox suffered their 21st straight defeat after a 5-1 loss to the Oakland A’s at Oakland Coliseum. The Sox matched the 1988 Orioles for the longest losing streak in American League history. Chicago sends Jonathan Cannon to the mound against the A’s tonight.

OLYMPIC NEWS:
The United States men’s basketball team is looking to lock up a spot in the Olympic semifinals. Team USA will face Brazil in the quarterfinals Tuesday in Paris. The U.S. is 9-and-0 against Brazil all-time at the Olympics, with its last win in the series coming back in Atlanta in 1996. The Americans finished group play in Paris at 3-and-0 following wins over Serbia, South Sudan and Puerto Rico. The U.S. is searching for its fifth straight gold medal. The game will tip-off at 2:30 P.M. Central
Simone Biles is adding a silver medal to her collection as she wraps up her time at the Paris Olympics. She finished behind Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade in the women’s floor exercise final Monday. Her Team USA teammate Jordan Chiles earned the bronze medal. The silver gives Biles eleven overall medals in her Olympic career. Biles has left the door open to trying to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
The United States women’s national soccer team will attempt to advance to the gold medal match today. The U.S. plays Germany in a semifinal match. Team USA advanced to the semifinals with a 1-0 win over Japan last Saturday. Trinity Rodman scored the game-winning goal in extra time. The winner of the U.S. versus Germany match will play in the gold medal match on Saturday. The loser of each match will play for the bronze medal on Friday.
The U.S. added eight more medals at the Paris Olympics on Monday. Team USA is now up to 79 total medals including 21 gold. That ties China for the most gold so far. The Chinese sit second in the overall standings with 53 total medals. France is third with 48 medals.
American Valleri Allman is celebrating her second straight Olympic gold medal in the women’s discus throw.
Elsewhere, American Sam Kendricks won the silver medal in the men’s pole vault. Meanwhile, the fastest man alive Noah Lyles is headed to the semifinals of the men’s 200-meters. Lyles and fellow Americans Kenneth Bednarek and Erriyon Knighton all qualified for the semis on Wednesday. In the women’s 200 meter semifinal, Gabrielle Thomas, McKenzie Long and Brittany Brown qualified for the final, which is slated for Tuesday. Other medal events on Tuesday include the men’s long jump, men’s 1500-meters, and the women’s hammer throw.
The U.S. women took home a bronze medal in the three-on-three basketball tournament at the Paris Olympics on Monday. The ladies edged Canada 16-13 in the third-place game.
