MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals surrendered three runs in the top of the seventh during a 6-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Busch Stadium. The Cards led by two entering the inning, but JoJo Romero gave up a two-run go-ahead home run to Brandon Lowe and was charged with his second loss. Paul Goldschmidt drove in a pair of runs during the losing effort. The Cardinals are in second place in the NL Central at 59-and-57, but they’re seven games out of first place and two-and-a-half games out of the final NL Wild Card spot. Miles Mikolas starts for St. Louis against Kansas City tonight in Kansas City at 7:10.
The Cubs and White Sox renew the Crosstown Classic rivalry when the two teams meet for a two-game set that begins tonight at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Cubs are coming off a series win over the Minnesota Twins earlier this week and are in fourth place in the NL Central at 57-and-60. The White Sox dropped their series with the A’s, but they snapped a 21-game losing streak in the process. The Southsiders are in last place in the AL Central at 28-and-89. First pitch is at 7:10PM.

OLYMPIC NEWS:
The U.S. women’s volleyball team is one win away from another gold medal. Team USA booked its trip to the gold medal game after topping Brazil in five sets. Kathryn Plummer led the team with 26 points to go along with seven blocks. Avery Skinner chipped in with 19 points and Andrea Drews scored 18 points. Both players also recorded a dozen blocks. The United States will face Italy in the final on Sunday.
The U.S. men’s basketball team will play for the gold medal after surviving a scare in the semifinals against Serbia. The U.S. came back to defeat Serbia 95-91 after trailing by as many as 16 points and by eleven entering the fourth quarter. Stephen Curry led the way with 36 points. Joel Embiid finished with 19 points while LeBron James added 16 of his own. The U.S. will now play France in the gold medal game Saturday.
The U.S. women’s basketball team is one win away from competing for its eighth straight gold medal. Team USA will play Australia in the semifinals of the Paris Olympics today. The United States is 8-and-0 all-time against Australia in Olympic competition dating back to 1984. The Americans are fresh off an 88-74 win over Nigeria in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. The Women’s National Team enters the game riding a 59-game win streak that dates back to 1996.
Track Olympian Noah Lyles says his run at the 2024 Paris Olympics is over. After a third-place finish in the 200-meter race on Thursday, Lyles revealed he had tested positive for COVID two days prior, but was trying to push through his sickness. Later Thursday evening, Lyles made an announcement on social media saying “I believe this will be the end of my 2024 Olympics.” Lyles’ individual events have been finished, but he will sit out the four-by-one-hundred-meter relay race today.
America is the first country to cross the century mark for medals won at the Paris Olympics. The U.S. now has 103 including a competition-leading 30 gold. China is second in the medal count with 73 total and 29 gold. Host nation France is third with 54 total medals while Australia is third in the gold rankings with 18.
NFL PRESEASON:
The Chicago Bears continue preseason with a game against the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium tomorrow. Number-one overall pick Caleb Williams is expected to make his preseason debut after missing out on Chicago’s 21-17 win over the Texans in the Hall of Fame game last week. Tomorrow’s game kicks off at noon.
Week One of the NFL preseason kicked off on Thursday. Both games were low-scoring affairs. The Patriots took down the Panthers 17-3 the Giants beat the Lions 14-3. The preseason rolls on tonight with three games. The Falcons take on the Dolphins, the Texans play the Steelers and the Eagles face the Ravens.
NASCAR Cup Series Returns For Cook Out 400:
The NASCAR Cup Series is back from its break. The field battles at Richmond Raceway for the Cook Out 400 on Sunday. Kyle Larson leads the standings after a victory in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Chase Elliott, Tyler Reddick, Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney round out the top-five. Martin Truex Jr., Ty Gibbs, Chris Buescher and Ross Chastain make up the bottom-four of the playoff picture. There are just four races left before the postseason begins on September 8th.
