Published reports out of Wabash County say Mt. Carmel may not have a city swimming pool next year.
During a special meeting city council meeting Friday, Mayor Joe Judge said inspectors with the Illinois Department of Public Health were in town over the summer and looked at the pool to recertify it for operation next year, but Mayor Judge said the results from the IDPH were not favorable. Leaks have reportedly caused the pool to lose about 35,000 gallons of water a day, resulting in the city putting nearly 45 gallons of chlorine in the pool each day.
The city has proposed building a new aquatic facility, but that will need approval from the voters in November. The council approved an ordinance Friday that will place a referendum on the ballot asking city voters to give the city the authority to issue up to $3.5 million in general obligation bonds to help pay for the $8 million pool. Mayor Judge said if the city is going to have a pool, the referendum needs to be approved.
