A pleasant run of weather is expected in the southern Illinois region the next several days, as the area gets a break from typical summer heat and humidity this time of year. The current weather forecast from the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky is keeping temperatures below normal through late next week, although at least slight rain chances enter the forecast starting Monday. Warmer temperatures are expected in the extended forecasts, running through August 23rd, with above normal precip in the six-to-ten day outlook and below normal in the 8 to 14 day outlook.
No changes in the latest U.S. Drought Monitor, despite recent drier weather in the area. No Abnormally Dry or Drought conditions are noted anywhere in Illinois, except for a small area of Abnormally Dry conditions in the northeastern part of the state.
As far as area rivers this morning, the Little Wabash River east of Fairfield stands at 10.7 feet, below the 17-foot flood stage. At Clay City the river is at 5.38 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet. At Carmi the stage is 13.01 feet. Flood stage is 27 feet. The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 5.28 feet. Flood stage is 15 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel reads 3.97 feet. Flood stage is 19 feet.
