MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals fell apart late during their 8-3 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday. The game was tied at two before the Cards surrendered four runs in the seventh. Paul Goldschmidt homered in the losing effort, while Ryan Fernandez was charged with his fourth loss in relief. The Cardinals are a game-and-a-half out of the NL’s final Wild Card spot at 60-and-58. They send Sonny Gray to the mound against the Reds tonight in Cincinnati at 5:40.
The Chicago Cubs swept the Chicago White Sox with a 3-1 win during the Crosstown Classic from Guaranteed Rate Field on Saturday. The game was tied at one in the top of the eighth when Miguel Amaya hit a two-run single to put the Northsiders up for good. Porter Hodge earned his first win in relief, while Hector Neris picked up his 17th save. The Cubs are in third place in the NL Central at 59-and-60. The Southsiders are in last place in the AL Central at 28-and-91. Shota Imanaga starts for the Cubs against Cleveland tonight in Cleveland at 5:40 while Ky Bush goes for the Sox against the Yankees in Chicago at 7:10.

OLYMPIC NEWS:
The U.S. women’s basketball team is taking home a gold medal for the eighth straight Olympics. The U.S. trailed by double digits early in the third quarter before storming back to defeat France 67-66. The win extended Team USA’s Olympic winning streak to 61 games.
The United States is coming home after one of the most successful Summer Games in history. Team USA won 126 medals overall, their highest total since capturing 174 medals in Los Angeles in 1984. American women and women’s teams combined for a total of 26 gold medals, which is the most ever in a single Olympics. The U.S. was also dominant on the track and in the pool, winning 34 athletic medals and 28 swimming. Team USA also surpassed three-thousand all-time medals which is the most for any country.
