On Saturday night, an earthquake occurred near Enfield adding to the unusual seismic activity experienced in Illinois and Missouri this year. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that a 2.4 magnitude earthquake took place in the southeastern part of Illinois at around 10:03 PM.
While this event is not believed to be associated with the New Madrid Seismic Zone, experts suggest it might be linked to the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone. Geological records indicate that this region has experienced significant quakes in the past, with magnitudes reaching as high as 7.0 or possibly even 7.5.
Fortunately, the 2.4 magnitude quake is considered too minor to cause any damage, and few individuals in the Enfield area reported feeling the tremor on Saturday night.
