State Senator Terri Bryant expressed her deep humility as she shepherded House Joint Resolution 36 through the State Senate to rename a section of Illinois 148 in Christopher as the Firefighter Kody M. Vanfossen Memorial Highway.

Joined by State Representative Dave Severin, as well as other state and local leaders and first responders, Bryant reflected on the significance of honoring Vanfossen during the naming ceremony held on Illinois 148 south of Christopher. She emphasized that the process of naming the highway after Vanfossen, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty, took longer than it should have.

During the ceremony, Severin introduced Brent Vanfossan of the Christopher Fire Department, who expressed gratitude on behalf of the Vanfossan family. Brent Vanfossan, Kody’s father and fellow firefighter, served alongside his son on the day he made the ultimate sacrifice while battling a 6-alarm commercial fire in Christopher. Senator Terri Bryant paid tribute to the Vanfossan family and commended Kody for his service to the community, recognizing him as an honorable man.

The poignant road renaming ceremony in honor of Vanfossan unfolded at the intersection of Yellow Banks Road and Illinois Route 148 south of Christopher, near the cemetery where Kody Vanfossan was laid to rest following the tragic incident that claimed his life on May 5, 2019.
