MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals had just six hits during a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Busch Stadium yesterday. Sonny Gray gave up a solo homer to Shohei Ohtani and an RBI single to Miguel Rojas during the fifth inning and was charged with his eighth loss. St. Louis didn’t get on the board until Lars Nootbaar went deep in the bottom of the eighth. The Cards are in second place in the NL Central at 61-and-63. The Cardinals host Milwaukee tomorrow night.
The St. Louis Cardinals could be getting one of their starting pitchers back soon. Oli Marmol told reporters yesterday that Steven Matz will make a rehab start this week and should be cleared to return barring any setbacks. Matz has been on the 60-day injured list since suffering a herniated disc injury on April 30th. He was 1-and-2 with a 6.18 ERA in six starts before the injury.

The Chicago Cubs had just four hits during a 1-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays at Wrigley Field. The Cubs went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. Chicago is in third place in the NL Central at 61-and-64. The Cubs host Detroit tomorrow night.

The Chicago White Sox suffered a 2-0 loss to the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park. The Sox managed just three hits in the losing effort. The White Sox had been eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday, and they’re in last place in the AL Central at 30-and-95. Jonathan Cannon starts for the Sox against San Francisco tonight.

The Indiana Fever have won back to back games after topping the Seattle Storm 92-75 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with 27 points. Caitlin Clark chipped in with 23 points and nine assists. Indiana is now second in the Eastern Conference at 13-and-15 and will visit the Minnesota Lynx Saturday night at Target Center.
