The Illinois Department of Transportation has began a project to replace the two current bridges on Interstate 64 that span the Wabash River, located just east of Grayville in White County.

This $136 million improvement initiative will unfold over six consecutive construction seasons and will be carried out through the following stages:

Stage 1: Throughout construction, motorists should anticipate lane closures on I-64 in White County. At least one lane will always remain open in both directions. Activities will involve pavement repairs and the establishment of crossovers for a future traffic shift. The construction is projected to conclude in early winter 2024.

Stage 2: Once the crossovers are finalized, traffic will utilize the eastbound I-64 lanes. This phase will involve the dismantling of the westbound I-64 bridge and the construction of new eastbound and westbound bridges. The commencement of this work is expected in winter 2024, with the construction of the new structures anticipated to be completed by fall 2028.

Stage 3: The final phase will encompass the removal of the existing eastbound structure. Motorists should anticipate lane closures and shifts. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2028 and reach completion by fall 2029.

Drivers are strongly advised to closely monitor changing conditions and adhere to all detour signs before entering the work zone. It is crucial to obey posted speed limits, avoid using mobile devices, and remain vigilant for workers and equipment in the vicinity.
