WEST NILE VIRUS POSITIVE MOSQUITO SAMPLE COLLECTED IN CLAY COUNTY

By Mark Wells Aug 23, 2024 | 5:55 AM

The Clay County Health Department has reported the first positive West Nile virus (WNV) mosquito sample of the season, collected on August 21st in Flora. This follows a previously reported positive bird specimen from June 10th. The presence of WNV in local mosquitoes indicates the virus is circulating, increasing the risk of infection for residents.

To protect against mosquito bites, residents are encouraged to follow the three R’s: reduce exposure, repel with insect repellent, and report breeding areas. WNV is transmitted through mosquito bites, with most infected individuals showing no symptoms, though some may experience mild illness. Those over 50 are at a higher risk for severe illness.

Monitoring activities include testing mosquito batches and submitting dead birds for analysis. The City of Flora has ongoing mosquito spraying, which started in early June and will continue through October.
