RAY TATE TO APPEAR IN WAYNE COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT WEDNESDAY

By Mark Wells Aug 26, 2024 | 12:01 PM

Ray Tate is set to return to the Wayne County Courthouse on Wednesday to request the withdrawal of his guilty plea. He will remain shackled, as ordered by Judge Denton Aud, due to the discovery of an escape plot by prosecutors. Evidence includes intercepted messages in which Tate solicited a relative’s assistance for the escape.

The hearing was postponed to Wednesday because Tate claimed he had not had sufficient time to review the notes and case file provided by his public defender, Heidi Hoffee. The prosecution argued that there have already been too many delays. Judge Aud has given Tate until 9 AM on Wednesday to prepare.

Additionally, Judge Aud listened to arguments from Wayne County State’s Attorney Kevin Kakac regarding the exclusion of testimony from Tate’s fellow inmate, convicted murderer Telvin Shaw. Kakac contended that Shaw could not offer any relevant testimony, as his incarceration began 18 years before the killing of Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy,  Sean Riley.
