MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals gave up three late runs during a 7-5 loss to the San Diego Padres at Busch Stadium. The Cards led by a run entering the seventh before Jurickson Profar tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Jake Cronenworth drove in the go-ahead run with a single later in the inning. Paul Goldschmidt went deep in the losing effort, and John King was charged with his third loss out of the bullpen. St. Louis has dropped three of four and is now in third place in the NL Central at 65-and-67. The Cardinals send Andre Pallante to the mound against the Padres tonight.
The St. Louis Cardinals are already parting ways with one of their trade deadline acquisitions. The team designated reliever Shawn Armstrong for assignment yesterday. The Cardinals traded for Armstrong in a deal with the Rays that featured St. Louis outfielder Dylan Carlson last month. Armstrong went 1-and-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 11 appearances with the Cardinals. St. Louis replaced Armstrong with reliever Riley O’Brien.
The Cubs made easy work of the Pirates again following a 9-5 win from PNC Park. Dansby Swanson celebrated his mom’s birthday with a two-run homer while Seiya Suzuki also crushed a two-run shot. Justin Steele earned the win after giving up two runs over five innings. Chicago has won five-of-six to remain five-and-a-half games behind the Braves for the last NL Wild Card spot at 67-and-66. Kyle Hendricks starts for the Northsiders against Pittsburgh this afternoon.
The Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers had their game suspended in the top of the first inning because of rain at Guaranteed Rate Field yesterday. The teams will resume the game today as part of a doubleheader in Chicago. The Southsiders and Texas will conclude the series tomorrow.
The Astros are adding a veteran outfielder to their roster with just over a month left in the regular season. ESPN reports that Houston is finalizing a deal with Jason Heyward after he was designated for assignment by the Los Angeles Dodgers last week. The 15-year veteran is batting .208 with six home runs and 28 RBI through 63 games played this season. Heyward has played in over 17-hundred career games split between the Dodgers, Cubs, Cardinals and Braves. The five-time Gold Glover won the World Series with the Cubs in 2016.
