As Labor Day weekend approaches, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois State Police (ISP) are emphasizing the serious consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or other impairing substances. Over 200 local law enforcement agencies will participate in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” safety campaign to enhance road safety during this busy time.

Stephane B. Seck-Birhame, bureau chief of Safety Programs and Engineering at IDOT, stated, “A DUI arrest can change lives forever and is completely preventable. The consequences include hefty fines, legal fees, increased insurance rates, and potentially fatal outcomes.”

During the campaign, which runs through Labor Day, ISP and local law enforcement will increase patrols to remind drivers of the serious repercussions of impaired driving. Last year, the holiday weekend saw 11 fatal crashes in Illinois, resulting in 14 deaths, with three crashes linked to alcohol.

ISP Division of Patrol Col. Chris Owen emphasized, “Driving under the influence is one of Illinois’ Fatal Four driving behaviors. If we catch you driving impaired, we will pull you over to protect you and others.”

The campaign also highlights the importance of seat belt use and adherence to speed limits, reinforcing compliance with the “Click It or Ticket” initiative alongside “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” These efforts are funded by federal grants administered by IDOT and are part of a broader multimedia campaign titled “It’s Not a Game.”
