IDOT REOPENING LANES IN CONSTRUCTION ZONES FOR THE LABOR DAY WEEKEND

By Mark Wells Aug 30, 2024 | 11:56 AM

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced on Thursday that construction lanes will reopen, where feasible, for the Labor Day holiday to reduce travel disruptions.

Non-emergency closures will be lifted from 3 PM today until 11:59 PM on Monday.

However, some lane closures will remain in effect during the holiday weekend. Travelers should expect delays and allow extra time when passing through these areas. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert to changing conditions and signage in work zones, follow posted speed limits, avoid mobile device usage, and watch for workers and equipment. Remember to buckle up and drive sober at all times.

Over the next six years, IDOT plans to enhance over 3,200 miles of highway and nearly 9 million square feet of bridge deck as part of the Rebuild Illinois initiative, which is investing $33.2 billion in all transportation modes. By the end of Year Five of Rebuild Illinois, approximately $16 billion has been allocated to improvements across 6,541 miles of highway, 686 bridges, and 986 additional safety enhancements.
