MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals split a four-game series with the San Diego Padres following a 4-1 win at Busch Stadium. Sonny Gray shoved to earn his 12th win, giving up just one run on three hits in six innings. Masyn Winn went deep in the victory, while Ryan Helsley secured his 41st save. The Cardinals are back to .500 at 67-and-67. Erick Fedde starts for St. Louis against the Yankees tonight.

The Chicago Cubs continue their Wild Card chase as they begin a series with the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park tonight. The Cubs are just five games back of the final Wild Card spot in the National League with a 68-and-66 record. The Northsiders haven’t announced a starting pitcher for tonight’s game. First pitch is at 5:45PM.

The Chicago White Sox were swept by the Texas Rangers with a 2-1 loss at Guaranteed Rate Field yesterday. The Sox managed just three hits in the game and didn’t get on the board until the ninth inning. Andrew Benintendi homered in the losing effort, while Nick Nastrini fell to 0-and-6 after surrendering a run on three hits in six innings. The Southsiders are in last place in the AL Central at 31-and-104. Chicago sends Jonathan Cannon to the mound against the Mets tonight.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL:
The Illinois Fighting Illini wasted no time disposing of the Eastern Illinois Panthers during a 45-0 win at Memorial Stadium. The Illini raced out to a 31-0 halftime lead and coasted to the win in the second half. Luke Altmyer passed for 213 yards and four touchdowns, while Kaden Feagin added 108 yards and a score on the ground. The 1-and-0 Illini host number-24 Kansas on September 7th.

Week One of the college football season is in full swing. Four ranked teams got big wins in their season openers on Thursday. Number 11 Missouri took down Murray State 51-0, Number 13 Utah smacked Southern Utah 49-0, Number 24 Kansas blew out Lindenwood 48-3 and Number 22 NC State beat Western Carolina 38-21. Deion Sanders’ Colorado Buffaloes survived a valiant effort from FCS power North Dakota State to win 31-26. Six games involving FBS teams take place on Friday. Among the matchups are Number 16 Oklahoma taking on Temple and Stanford hosting TCU.
