The Wayne County Corn/Soybean Yield Tour wrapped up on Tuesday, September 3rd, featuring eight teams that meticulously surveyed the four quadrants of Wayne County, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1983. These teams assessed the yields of 10 corn and soybean fields, providing farmers with crucial data to refine their planning based on anticipated bushels.
This year marked the 41st tour, led by Gregg Barnard, president of the Corn Growers Association, and sponsored by Fairfield National Bank and Bean Capital Banking Center in Wayne City. Historically, the southern regions of the county yield higher numbers for both corn and soybeans, and this year was no exception. The southern quadrants averaged 206 bushels per acre (Bu/A) for corn and 56 bushels for soybeans. In contrast, the northern fields reported averages of 175.6 Bu/A for corn and 40.2 Bu/A for soybeans, reflecting a notable decrease of 30.4 bushels for corn and 15.8 for beans compared to their southern counterparts. “Corn yields are significantly up this year compared to last,” Barnard noted.
He emphasized that the consistency of the fields across the county contributed to the strong yield figures. However, he mentioned that soybean yields appeared lower than usual, attributing this to a need for more rainfall to support their growth.
