Bill Bruce Memorial Softball Tournament
September 14, 2024 – Starting at 9:00am
The tournament will be 2 games played per school. Teams are seeded, 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs 3 play at 9:00am. Losing teams play and winning teams play at 10:30am.
Each game will be played according to SIJHSAA regulations.
Time Limit: A new inning will not be started after the one hour and 15-minute mark.
The top seeded team will be the official scorebook for the game and responsible for keeping time. A traveling trophy will be presented to the winning team. It is the school’s responsibility to have the year and their school name put on the trophy and bring it to the tournament the following year.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals took the lead in the bottom of the eighth during a 2-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium. The game was tied at one before Paul Goldschmidt hit a go-ahead double in the frame. Nolan Arenado also homered in the victory. JoJo Romero picked up his seventh win in relief, while Ryan Helsley earned his 44th save. The Cardinals are still six-and-a-half games behind the Mets for the final NL Wild Card spot at 73-and-72. Sonny Gray takes the mound for St. Louis against the Reds this afternoon.
The Chicago Cubs gave up five home runs during a 10-8 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The Northsiders scored four runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at seven before giving up a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth. Seiya Suzuki and Cody Bellinger both homered in the losing effort, while Shawn Armstrong was charged with his third loss in relief. Chicago is five games back of the Mets for the final NL Wild Card spot with a 75-and-71 record. The Cubs visit the Rockies tomorrow night.
The Chicago White Sox nearly overcame a five-run deficit during a 6-4 loss to the Cleveland Guardians at Guaranteed Rate Field. The White Sox cut into Cleveland’s 5-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the third before going silent the rest of the way. Lenyn Sosa had two hits and an RBI in the losing effort, while Davis Martin was charged with his fourth loss after surrendering five runs on six hits in three innings. The Southsiders remain in last place in the AL Central at 33-and-114. They host the A’s tomorrow night.

WNBA:
The Chicago Sky were humiliated on their home court during an 89-58 loss to the Washington Mystics at Wintrust Arena. Chicago trailed 29-13 after the first quarter and never got back into the game. Chennedy Carter had 16 points in the losing effort, while Kamilla Cardoso finished with 13. The Sky remain in eighth place in the WNBA at 13-and-23. Chicago visits Minnesota tomorrow night.
The Indiana Fever have dropped two of their last three games after falling to the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces 86-75 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana in scoring with 24 points. Aliyah Boston recorded a team-high 10 rebounds. Caitlin Clark chipped in with 16 points and six assists. The Fever have clinched a playoff berth and are third in the Eastern Conference at 19-and-18. Indiana will host the Aces in a rematch tomorrow night.
