BLACK DIAMOND CONFERENCE EXTENDS INVITATION TO RED HILL FOR FOOTBALL:
After back to back seasons of having Vienna/Goreville unable to field a varsity team, the Black Diamond Conference has extended an invitation to Red Hill to join, in football only in an effort to get back to a 10-team, closed conference.
Red Hill is a member of the Midland Trail and Little Okaw Valley for all other sports. The Salukis are competing in their third season as an independent in football since leaving the Little Illini after the 2021-22 school year, having qualified for the 1A playoffs each of the past two seasons.
Red Hill was a member of the North Egypt Conference with current BDC members Carmi-White County, Fairfield and Flora up until leaving for the Little Illini after the 2000-01 school year. The Salukis were part of the LIC with Edwards County and Flora until those school left for the Diamond.
Vienna would compete as an independent in football but remain a conference member in all other sports.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth during a 10-5 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals trailed by a run entering the inning, but Masyn Winn hit a solo home run to tie the game. Ivan Herrera knocked in the go-ahead run with a single later in the frame before the Cards poured it on. Brendan Donovan hit his 13th home run in the victory, and Michael McGreevy picked up his second win out of the pen. St. Louis is on a three-game winning streak. The 77-and-75 Cardinals send Erick Fedde to the mound against the Pirates tonight.
The St. Louis Cardinals are shutting down one of their starting pitchers. The club placed Lance Lynn on the 15-day injured list with right knee inflammation yesterday. The injury will keep Lynn out for the rest of the 2024 season. Lynn earned a win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday. He finished his year with a 7-and-4 record and a 3.84 ERA in 23 starts.
The Chicago Cubs dropped their series against the Oakland A’s with a 5-3 loss in the finale from Wrigley Field. The Cubs led by two entering the seventh, but Oakland tied the game in the inning before scoring two more runs to take the lead in the eighth. Dansby Swanson, Seiya Suzuki, and Cody Bellinger all drove in a run during the losing effort, while Nate Pearson was charged with his second loss in relief. The 77-and-75 Cubs send Javier Assad to the mound against the Nationals tonight.
The Chicago White Sox fell apart in extras during a 4-3, 13-inning loss against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium. The White Sox scored in the tenth and 11th innings, but the Angels answered back with a run of their own in each ensuing half-inning to extend the game. Jairo Iriarte was charged with his first loss in relief after allowing a walk-off single in the 13th. Andrew Vaughn hit his 19th home run in the losing effort. The Southsiders remain in last place in the AL Central at 36-and-117. The White Sox visit San Diego tomorrow night.

Blues Begin Training Camp
The St. Louis Blues begin their quest for the 2024-25 Stanley Cup when they open up training camp at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, MO this morning. The Blues have their first practice at 10:00AM. St. Louis’ roster currently consists of 64 players. The Blues also have their first preseason game this Saturday against Dallas.
Blackhawks Name Foligno Captain
The Chicago Blackhawks have a new captain. The team announced yesterday that Nick Foligno will become the 35th captain in franchise history. The Blackhawks played without a captain last year after former captain Jonathan Toews left the team in the previous offseason. Foligno had 17 goals and 20 assists in 74 games with the Hawks last season.

Four Bears Miss Practice
The Chicago Bears are dealing with some injuries. Wide receiver Keenan Allen and offensive lineman Teven Jenkins were among four players to miss practice due to injuries yesterday. Six other players were limited participants in practice, including starting edge rusher Montez Sweat and wide receiver Rome Odunze. The 1-and-1 Bears are at Indianapolis this Sunday.
Pro Football Hall Of Fame Announces Class Of 2025 Candidates
The Pro Football Hall of Fame has announced 167 modern era candidates for the Class of 2025, including 16 players that have been nominated for the first time. Former Giants quarterback Eli Manning, Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly, Ravens pass rusher Terrell Suggs and legendary kicker Adam Vinatieri headline the first time nominees. A screening committee will reduce the list of nominees to 50 players next month. Under the Hall of Fame’s bylaws, between three to five players can get in as modern era candidates. There will also be three senior candidates, grouped with one coach and contributor.
