MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL:
The St. Louis Cardinals failed to complete a four-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates thanks to a 3-2 loss at Busch Stadium yesterday. The Cardinals led by a run entering the seventh before Yasmani Grandal hit a solo home run. The Cards gave up the lead for good on a Nick Gonzales RBI single in the eighth. Brendan Donovan had four hits and two RBI in the losing effort, while JoJo Romero was charged with his third loss in relief. St. Louis is in third place in the NL Central at 77-and-76. The Cardinals send Kyle Gibson to the mound against the Guardians tonight.

Cody Bellinger and Seiya Suzuki [[ SAY-ya ]] had big nights as the Chicago Cubs downed the Washington Nationals 7-6 at Wrigley Field. Bellinger was 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Suzuki was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Isaac Paredes’ [[ e-sock puh-ray-dess ]] RBI groundout in the seventh inning plated the game-winning run. Reliever Ethan Roberts got his first win of the season and Porter Hodge picked up the save. The Cubs snapped a two-game losing streak and are 78-and-75. Jameson Taillon starts for the Northsiders against Washington this afternoon.

The Chicago White Sox begin a weekend series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park tonight. The Sox are coming off a series win over the Los Angeles Angels earlier this week. Chicago is in last place in the AL Central at 36-and-117. Garrett Crochet takes the mound for the Southsiders tonight. First pitch is at 8:40PM.

The Illinois Fighting Illini open up Big Ten play with a game against number-22 Nebraska at Memorial Stadium tonight. The Illini are undefeated at 3-and-0 after crushing Central Michigan 30-9 last Saturday. Illinois has won three of its last four game against the Cornhuskers. Tonight’s game begins at 7:00PM.

NHL:
Blues Begin Preseason
The St. Louis Blues open up preseason play with a game against the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center tomorrow night. The Blues just started training camp yesterday. St. Louis is looking to rebound from a disappointing 2023-24 season that saw the team miss the playoffs for the second season in a row. Tomorrow’s game begins at 6:00PM.
