The 2024 Illinois fall trout season is set to kick off on Saturday, October 19th, at 60 different ponds, lakes, and streams throughout the state. An early catch-and-release season will begin on October 5th, but anglers must wait until 5am on October 19th to keep any trout. The daily limit for catch is five trout.
To participate, all anglers must obtain an Illinois fishing license and an inland trout stamp, which are available at various locations, including bait shops and online. It’s important for anglers to check the opening times for their favorite fishing spots, as not all sites will open at 5am on the first day.
The fall trout season provides a great opportunity for families to enjoy fishing together. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has been running a catchable trout program since 1994, stocking over 80,000 rainbow trout each year in waters designated for trout fishing. An additional 80,000 trout are stocked in the spring, starting in April. For more information on trout fishing and regulations, visit the IDNR website at https://www.ifishillinois.org.
