Captain Nathan Douglas, the Commander of Illinois State Police (ISP) Troop 9, has shared the outcomes of the Nighttime Enforcement (NITE) patrols conducted in Clay, Effingham, Fayette, Wayne, Wabash, and Hamilton counties throughout September. These patrols focused on preventing and addressing impaired driving and occupant restraint violations, particularly between the hours of 9:00 PM and 6:00 AM.

During this enforcement initiative, officers issued 2 citations for Driving Under the Influence (DUI), 6 citations related to alcohol or drug offenses, and a total of 32 citations or arrests. Additionally, they provided 100 written warnings and cited individuals for 9 registration violations, 12 driver’s license offenses, and 2 insurance infractions.

In Illinois, alcohol and drug impairment is believed to contribute to over 47% of all fatal motor vehicle crashes. Nationally, there is an alcohol-related traffic fatality every 39 minutes, with more than half of all fatal crashes in Illinois occurring at night. The NITE program empowers officers to intensify their efforts in removing dangerous impaired drivers from the roads while ensuring that all passengers are properly secured. This initiative is funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
