Ray Tate pleaded guilty on Wednesday in Clinton County Court to multiple charges related to incidents following the fatal shooting of Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley in December 2021.
During a pretrial hearing, Tate admitted guilt to two counts of aggravated kidnapping, as well as charges of home invasion and aggravated possession of stolen firearms.
The charges in Clinton County stem from an incident where Tate forcibly entered a rural home in Carlyle alongside a man whose car he had carjacked, holding both the car’s driver and the homeowner hostage during a police standoff. Fortunately, both captives were released unharmed.
Tate received a sentence of 30 years in prison for each of the first three offenses and an additional 10 years for the firearms charge, along with a $5,000 fine for each count.
Earlier this month, Circuit Judge Douglas Gruenke set several conditions for the jury trial that was initially scheduled for Monday. Given the serious nature of the offenses, previous escape attempts, and heightened security measures, Tate was to be restrained at his legs, with a table skirt placed to keep the restraints hidden from the jury.
Currently, Tate is incarcerated at the maximum-security Menard State Penitentiary in Chester, serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for Deputy Riley’s murder.
