Area river stages remain on the low side as the dry October continues in the region. Here’s the latest stages as of this morning: the Little Wabash River east of Fairfield is at 4.03 feet. Flood stage is 17 feet. At Clay City the stage is 3.72 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet. At Carmi the river is at 3.08 feet. Flood stage is 27 feet. The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 4.99 feet. Flood stage is 15 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 2.3 feet. Flood stage is 19 feet. Bonpas Creek at Browns is at 1.12 feet.
The dry conditions are expected to continue for a while. The forecast from the National Weather Service in Paducah, Kentucky is dry for the next week. The extended forecasts favor above-normal temperatures, although there is a chance for near to above-normal precipitation in the 8 to 14 day outlook, running from October 26th through November 1st. The 30-day outlook for November, released this past Thursday, shows above normal temperatures expected, with near to slightly below normal precipitation.
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map still shows Wayne County and southern Illinois out of any dry or drought conditions. The central part of the state is shown as Abnormally Dry. Most of nothern Illinois is in a Moderate Drought and the northern tip of the state near the Wisconsin border is in a Severe Drought.
