The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is now accepting applications for all households which started Friday, November 1st. This program provides financial assistance for utility bills to low-income families, and additional discounts are available for those not enrolled in LIHEAP.
Applications had previously opened on October 1 for specific groups, including adults aged 60 and older, individuals with disabilities, families with children under 5, and households facing utility disconnection or with low propane levels.
Local community action agencies administer the program on a first-come, first-served basis until mid-August, although the application period may close earlier if funding is exhausted. Interested individuals are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
Eligibility is based on household income, which must be below double the federal poverty level. For reference, this translates to $2,510 monthly for individuals, $3,407 for two-member households, and $4,303 for three-member households, with higher thresholds for larger families. More details on income limits can be found on the state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity website.
