Jurors in the racketeering trial of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan are hearing more and more secret FBI recordings. Madigan allies could be heard discussing the need to keep the former speaker happy during recordings played yesterday in court. Former ComEd executive Fidel Marquez was on the stand again. The jury got to see videos of meetings Marquez recorded while wearing an FBI wire in 2019. Some of the recordings were used in last year’s ComEd bribery trial, when Marquez delivered similar testimony.
The deadline to apply for FEMA assistance for homeowners and renters with damage related to severe weather and flooding in the state from July 13th through the 16th is coming up. Those who wish to apply can do so through November 19th. FEMA assistance was made available to those impacted in St. Clair, Washington and other counties in Northern Illinois. Assistance may include grants for temporary housing, basic home repair or replacement and other disaster-related expenses.
The Governor’s Office of Management & Budget has released its five-year projection, showing Illinois spending $63 billion by the year 2030. That’s while the current fiscal year budget has expenditures at just over $53 billion. The management and budget office’s report shows projected increases in spending on education, healthcare, human services, public safety, and government services during the five-year period in Illinois.
November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month and health officials say it’s a good time to get screened. While Illinois ranks as 16th worst in the nation for new lung cancer cases, data from the State Department of Public Health shows lung cancer is the leading cause of death and is the third most common cancer in Illinois. This Saturday, November 9th, is National Lung Cancer Screening Day, when numerous screening facilities around Illinois will serve those who can’t take time off work to be screened at other times.
