Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Colorado Governor Jared Polis are forming a coalition of governors to strengthen democracy during Donald Trumps’ second term as president. The goal of Governors Safeguarding Democracy is to protect state-level institutions of democracy. The nonpartisan group will use their collective legislative, budgetary, executive and administrative powers. Pritzker said the governors will be discussing environmental protections, the threat of mass deportations, and other issues.
The Illinois Farm Bureau is suing the American Farm Bureau Federation. The lawsuit follows a decision by AFBF to expel the Illinois farmer group Tuesday due a disagreement over a membership change within IFB. The Illinois Farm Bureau claims the termination violates a past settlement agreement. The group believes AFBF has abandoned more than 70-thousand Illinois farmer members because an affiliate insurance company doesn’t want to force non-farmers to join.
Attorneys for Michael Madigan are trying to discredit a key prosecution witness in the former Illinois House Speaker’s racketeering trial. Fidel Marquez took the stand yesterday for a fifth day. The former ComEd executive wore a wire for the FBI. During cross-examination, Madigan’s lawyers attacked Marquez’s credibility, questioning his motives for cooperating with the FBI. He is expected to be back on the witness stand today.
