River Stages and Drought Update

By Mark Wells Nov 16, 2024 | 6:39 AM

Area river stages remain on the low side despite rainfall in the region in recent days.  Here’s the latest stages as of this morning:  the Little Wabash River east of Fairfield is at 7.39 feet, below the 17-foot flood stage.  At Clay City the stage is 6.39 feet.  Flood stage is 18 feet.  The stage at Carmi is 6.3 feet.  Flood stage is 27 feet.  The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 6.15 feet.  Flood stage is 15 feet.  The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 4.69 feet.  Flood stage is 19 feet.  Bonpas Creek at Browns is at 3.58 feet.

Recent rainfall has diminished the dry conditions in our area somewhat.  The latest U.S. Drought Monitor Map shows Wayne County and areas to the south and east out of dry conditions.  Drought continues in the rest of the state, with eastern and northern Illinois in Moderate Drought conditions and Severe Drought conditions near the Wisconsin border.

The weather forecast calls for dry conditions until Monday for our area, with several small chances for rain for most of next week.  A significant cooldown is expected later next week, with temperatures dropping to the 40s for highs by Thursday and, depending on the forecaster, the first hints of a few snowflakes.  Extended forecasts show a chance for below normal temperatures in the six to 10 day forecasts, and closer to normal temperatures toward the end of the month.
