RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO CHECK OVER PROPERTY TAX BILLS, THERE MAY BE A CHANCE OF MISSING EXEMPTIONS

It has been reported that some residents living in Arrington, Berry, and Indian Prairie Townships may not have had exemptions applied correctly to this year’s property tax bills, leaving some residents caught unaware that they may have overpaid.

In some cases, credits going unaccounted for are the General Homestead and Senior Homestead exemptions.  If eligible, those credits represent $11,000 in tax adjustments.

In one case, an individual’s tax bill did not include the exemptions they were entitled to, and led to an unexpected $700 overpayment. That individual’s tax bill was corrected at the Wayne County Supervisor of Assessors Office, after they applied for a Correction of Error.

Certified CIAO, Sandy Beeson, confirmed several residents in her own tax district have reported similar errors, and encouraged seniors who have owned their homes since January 1st to double-check their tax bills for possible errors.  Beason, who facilitates assessments for the townships affected, emphasized even if residents have already paid their bill, corrections may still be made until December 27th.
