Illinois has launched its first state-managed off-highway vehicle trail system at Sahara Woods State Recreation Area in Saline County, located just five miles west of Harrisburg, south of Illinois Route 13. This new system features 26 miles of two-way trails, designed to cater to the increasing demand for motorized recreation in the state.
The Sahara Woods area has a history as a coal mining site that operated from 1936 until 1995. In 1999, the strip-mined land was donated to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which has since undertaken reclamation efforts to address environmental and safety issues.
The trails are open from 9 AM to 5 PM, Friday through Monday. Vehicle permits are available for $20 per day or $65 for a four-day pass. Riders are required to complete a registration form, sign a waiver of liability, and purchase permits online in advance. Additionally, off-highway vehicles must be wider than 64 inches, in accordance with the Illinois Motor Vehicle Code.
