The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has announced that the state’s respiratory illness level has risen from Low to Moderate, indicating an increased risk of exposure to seasonal illnesses as families come together for the holidays.
Data from IDPH’s Seasonal Respiratory Illness Dashboard shows a rise in hospital admissions for COVID-19, flu, and RSV during the week ending December 14th. The percentage of emergency department visits for respiratory issues also increased from 13.8% to 14.7%. Additionally, there has been a rise in ICU admissions due to RSV, particularly among children aged 0-4 years.
IDPH Director Dr. Sameer Vohra stressed the importance of taking precautions to protect vulnerable individuals, including those over 65, very young children, and those with weakened immune systems, during the holiday season. He reiterated that the best defense against severe illness from COVID-19, flu, and RSV is vaccination, which is readily available. Other effective measures include maintaining good ventilation and practicing proper hand hygiene. Anyone experiencing concerning respiratory symptoms is advised to seek medical attention.
